How to prepare for the LDS Part 2
Read the Royal College of Surgeons of England LDS Part 2 regulations and the GDC Preparing for Practice outcomes first so you understand all four components. Then rehearse the 5-minute OSCE stations, the 13-minute and 15-minute Diagnostic and Treatment Planning stages, and the 15-minute Medical Emergencies viva out loud to time.
Step by step
- 1
Review the RCS England LDS Part 2 regulations and four components
LDS Part 2 assesses Safe Beginner competence across four components in London: the Operative Test on a Dental Manikin, the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE), the Diagnostic and Treatment Planning (DTP) exercise, and the Medical Emergencies (ME) examination.
- 2
Practise 5-minute OSCE consultations and clinical vivas against the clock
Each OSCE station lasts 5 minutes after 1 minute of reading time. Rehearse taking a focused dental and medical history, explaining diagnoses and treatment options without jargon, obtaining Montgomery-compliant informed consent, and answering structured viva questions on dental prescribing, IR(ME)R 2017 and HTM 01-05.
- 3
Rehearse both stages of Diagnostic and Treatment Planning (DTP)
Practise the 13-minute simulated patient history consultation (after 3 minutes of reading time) and the 15-minute examiner oral (after 3 minutes of reading time). Present special investigations, radiographs and periodontal charting systematically, state tooth-by-tooth prognoses, and set out a phased treatment plan.
- 4
Speak through Medical Emergencies in Dental Practice using ABCDE
Rehearse the 15-minute Medical Emergencies oral (after 2 minutes of reading time), covering immediate ABCDE assessment, oxygen delivery, and Resuscitation Council UK and BNF Dental Practitioners' Formulary emergency drug routes and regimens for anaphylaxis, adrenal crisis, acute asthma, hypoglycaemia, cardiac chest pain, status epilepticus and choking.
- 5
Prepare for ethics, safeguarding and GDC Duty of Candour stations
Practise handling urgent two-week-wait oral cancer referrals, paediatric consultations with a parent or carer (dental trauma, caries prevention, safeguarding), and transparent GDC Duty of Candour disclosures after iatrogenic complications.

Practise with MedMock
MedMock practises the spoken components of the RCS England LDS Part 2 examination across eight station types with their real reading windows and clocks: five 5-minute OSCE station types (History & Information Gathering; Communication, Consent & Explanation; Breaking Bad News, Ethics & Candour; Paediatric Consultation with a parent or carer; and Prescribing, Therapeutics & Cross-Infection Viva), both stages of Diagnostic & Treatment Planning (13-minute Patient History and 15-minute Examiner Oral), and the 15-minute Medical Emergencies in Dental Practice Viva. The three-hour Dental Manikin operative test and physical resuscitation skills are hands-on and are not simulated.
Questions candidates ask
What components make up the RCS England LDS Part 2 exam?
LDS Part 2 comprises four components: an Operative Test on a Dental Manikin (DM), an Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE), a Diagnostic and Treatment Planning (DTP) exercise, and a Medical Emergencies (ME) examination.
How is LDS Part 2 different from MFDS Part 2?
LDS Part 2 is a qualifying examination for full GDC registration and includes five-minute OSCE stations, a two-stage Diagnostic and Treatment Planning exercise (13-minute patient history and 15-minute examiner oral), a 15-minute Medical Emergencies exam and a phantom-head test, whereas MFDS Part 2 is a postgraduate membership OSCE.
Does MedMock simulate the LDS Part 2 phantom-head test?
No. The three-hour Dental Manikin operative test requires hands-on phantom-head practice. MedMock simulates the spoken OSCE, Diagnostic and Treatment Planning, and Medical Emergencies viva stations.
