What is the Medical Virology ST3 interview, and how do you practise for it?

Combined Infection Training ST3 (Medical Virology) national interview: two 10-minute stations. Station 1 is a prepared presentation on a research paper with discussion, then suitability and commitment; Station 2 is a written clinical scenario, then an ethics, professionalism and governance question given verbally. MedMock lets you practise it out loud against an AI interview panel, with examiner-style feedback on any station you finish.

About Medical Virology (ST3) recruitment

  • The lead recruiter for combined infection training is Scotland.
  • Single-accredited medical virology programmes are in Group 2 of combined infection training.
  • Group 2 programme combinations include medical virology alone, infectious diseases and medical virology, and tropical medicine and medical virology.
  • Clinical virologists concentrate on diagnosing and managing patients with viral infections, using molecular tests for rapid diagnosis, monitoring antiviral drug resistance and managing outbreaks.
  • Virology contributes to public health through input into surveillance and immunisation programmes.
  • Like other combined infection training applicants at Group 2 level, medical virology applicants have two interview stations of 10 minutes each, with four questions ranging between 4 and 6 minutes.

Checked on 13 October 2026 against Infection specialties. Recruitment changes each year: confirm on the official pages before you apply.

Medical Virology ST3 interview practice, on demand

MedMock gives you an AI interviewer who challenges your answers, available 24/7. Pick a station, have a spoken conversation, and ask for examiner-style feedback when you finish, scored against what genuinely matters in the Medical Virology ST3.

How it works

1

Choose a station

Choose the kind of question or scenario you want to rehearse — ethics, motivation, a role-play, and more.

2

Have the conversation

Speak naturally, out loud. The AI interviewer listens and asks the demanding follow-ups, just as a real interviewer would.

3

Get instant feedback

The moment you finish, you get specific, examiner-style feedback and a score — what you did well, what cost you marks, and precisely what to fix before the next attempt.

Practise every scenario

MedMock covers the stations you will face in the Medical Virology ST3 interview. Rehearse each one until it feels routine.

1

Presentation and Suitability

Station 1: your prepared presentation of up to three minutes on an interesting research paper relevant to infection specialties, about three minutes of discussion, then a question on your suitability for and commitment to infection training.

2

Clinical Scenario and Ethics

Station 2: a short written clinical scenario in virology to read and discuss — for example HIV drug resistance, hepatitis B reactivation during chemotherapy or CMV in a transplant recipient — then an ethics, professionalism or governance question given verbally.
