ORE Part 2 practice

What happens in the ORE Part 2 exam

The General Dental Council (GDC) Overseas Registration Examination (ORE) Part 2 is the clinical examination for dentists whose qualifications are not automatically recognised for UK registration, pitched at the standard of a newly qualified UK dental graduate (Safe Beginner). Held over four days in London, it comprises four components: an operative test on a dental manikin (phantom head), an Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE), a Diagnostic and Treatment Planning (DTP) exercise, and a Medical Emergencies (ME) structured examination.

Checked against the official sources on 24 October 2026.

The parts, in order

Operative test on a dental manikin (DM)180 minutes

Candidates perform three operative dental procedures on a dental manikin (phantom head) over three hours, testing practical clinical skills and infection control.

Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE)5 minutes

A circuit of 5-minute stations assessing clinical communication, history taking, consent, ethics, pain and anxiety management, prescribing, cross-infection control and practical clinical scenarios across behavioural and clinical dental domains.

Diagnostic and Treatment Planning (DTP)28 minutes

An actor-based patient history consultation followed by an examiner oral using special investigations, radiographs and charting to formulate a diagnosis and comprehensive treatment plan.

Medical Emergencies in dental practice (ME)15 minutes

A structured oral and practical assessment of the recognition and management of medical emergencies that may arise in the dental surgery, alongside cardiopulmonary resuscitation and airway management.

How it is marked

Each of the four ORE Part 2 components (Dental Manikin, OSCE, Diagnostic and Treatment Planning, and Medical Emergencies) is marked independently against GDC learning outcomes derived from Preparing for Practice.

Passing

Candidates must pass all four components of ORE Part 2 to pass the examination overall. A candidate who fails the Dental Manikin component on one procedure only, or fails one of the other components, must resit the whole Part 2 diet; up to four attempts at Part 2 are permitted within five years of first sitting Part 1.

Worth knowing

  • Candidates must pass ORE Part 1 before booking ORE Part 2 through their eGDC account.
  • MedMock practises the spoken components of ORE Part 2 — the spoken OSCE stations, both stages of Diagnostic and Treatment Planning (Patient History and Examiner Oral), and the Medical Emergencies viva. The Dental Manikin (phantom head) operative test and physical CPR/airway skills are hands-on and are not simulated.
