How to prepare for the MFDS Part 2
Start with the Royal College MFDS syllabus and OSCE candidate regulations so you know how the 7-minute stations and 2-minute reading windows work. Then rehearse simulated patient consultations, unseen diagnostic and treatment-planning cases, dental prescribing and medical emergency vivas out loud to time.
Step by step
- 1
Check the MFDS Part 2 format and syllabus domains
MFDS Part 2 is a purely clinical and communication OSCE with no phantom-head operative component. Each station gives you 2 minutes of reading time outside the room followed by 7 minutes inside the station with a simulated patient or examiner.
- 2
Use the 2-minute reading window to plan your station structure
During the 2 minutes of reading time, identify whether the station is a patient consultation, an unseen-case treatment-planning oral, or a structured clinical viva, and note the clinical findings, medical history modifiers or radiographs provided in the brief.
- 3
Practise 7-minute patient communication, consent and candour encounters
Rehearse taking a focused dental and medical history, explaining treatment options and material risks under Montgomery consent principles, breaking bad news on suspected oral malignancy, and apologising openly under the GDC Duty of Candour after an iatrogenic complication.
- 4
Structure your diagnosis and phased treatment planning answers
When presenting an unseen case to an examiner, state the acute diagnoses first, interpret the radiographs and periodontal charting systematically, assign a prognosis to each affected tooth, and present management in clear phases: relief of pain and stabilisation, disease control and prevention, definitive restorative or surgical care, and maintenance.
- 5
Rehearse UK dental guidelines and medical emergencies out loud
Practise speaking through SDCEP antimicrobial and anticoagulant/antiplatelet guidance, Delivering Better Oral Health preventive regimens, HTM 01-05 infection control, IR(ME)R 2017 radiography justification, and Resuscitation Council UK ABCDE medical emergency algorithms.

Questions candidates ask
Does MFDS Part 2 include a dental manikin (phantom head) test?
No. Unlike ORE Part 2 and LDS Part 2, MFDS Part 2 is an OSCE assessing communication, history taking, clinical reasoning, treatment planning and structured viva stations without operative phantom-head procedures.
How long is each MFDS Part 2 station on MedMock?
Each MFDS Part 2 station on MedMock runs with 2 minutes of reading time followed by a 7-minute station clock, matching the postgraduate dental OSCE format.
Can I practise both patient role-play and examiner viva stations?
Yes. Five of the eight MFDS Part 2 station types use a simulated patient or parent role-player, and three use a structured examiner oral covering treatment planning, prescribing, cross-infection and medical emergencies.
