What is the MFDS Part 2 OSCE, and how do you practise for it?

The Membership of the Faculty of Dental Surgery (MFDS) Part 2 OSCE of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, and Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, pitched at the standard of a dentist completing UK Dental Foundation Training and entering Dental Core Training. MedMock practises eight spoken 7-minute OSCE and unseen-case station types (each after 2 minutes of reading time): History & Information Gathering, Communication, Consent & Explanation, Breaking Bad News, Ethics & Candour, Paediatric Consultation, Prescribing, Therapeutics & Cross-Infection Viva, Diagnostic & Treatment Planning — Patient History, Diagnostic & Treatment Planning — Examiner Oral, and Medical Emergencies in Dental Practice Viva. MedMock lets you practise it out loud against an AI patient, with examiner-style feedback on any station you finish.

MFDS Part 2 OSCE practice, on demand

MedMock gives you a simulated patient who responds realistically, available 24/7. Pick a station, have a spoken conversation, and ask for examiner-style feedback when you finish, scored against what genuinely matters in the MFDS Part 2.

How it works

1

Choose a station

Pick from 8 station types drawn from the real MFDS Part 2 curriculum, or run a full mock that takes you through them as a circuit.

2

Have the conversation

Speak naturally, out loud. The AI patient or examiner responds in real time — with follow-up questions, emotions, cues and unexpected turns, just like the real stations.

3

Get instant feedback

The moment you finish, you get specific, examiner-style feedback and a score — what you did well, what cost you marks, and precisely what to fix before the next attempt.

Practise every station

MedMock practises the spoken OSCE and unseen-case stations of the Membership of the Faculty of Dental Surgery (MFDS Part 2) examination across eight 7-minute station types (each after 2 minutes of reading time): History & Information Gathering; Communication, Consent & Explanation; Breaking Bad News, Ethics & Candour; Paediatric Consultation; Prescribing, Therapeutics & Cross-Infection Viva; Diagnostic & Treatment Planning — Patient History; Diagnostic & Treatment Planning — Examiner Oral; and Medical Emergencies in Dental Practice Viva.

1

OSCE — History & Information Gathering

7-minute MFDS Part 2 OSCE encounter (after 2 minutes of reading time). Take a structured dental, pain, medical, medication and social history from a simulated patient — bleeding/anticoagulant screen, bisphosphonates/MRONJ risk, infective endocarditis risk, dental anxiety, and red flags.

2

OSCE — Communication, Consent & Explanation

7-minute MFDS Part 2 OSCE encounter (after 2 minutes of reading time). Explain a dental diagnosis, discuss treatment options (endodontic therapy, surgical extraction, periodontal therapy, fixed or removable prosthodontics), obtain Montgomery-standard informed consent, or deliver post-operative instructions in plain English.

3

OSCE — Breaking Bad News, Ethics & Candour

7-minute MFDS Part 2 OSCE encounter (after 2 minutes of reading time). Counsel a patient on an urgent two-week-wait suspected oral cancer referral, make a GDC Duty of Candour disclosure following an iatrogenic complication (separated endodontic instrument, oro-antral communication, wrong-tooth extraction, nerve injury), or handle confidentiality and colleague professionalism.

4

OSCE — Paediatric Consultation

7-minute MFDS Part 2 OSCE encounter (after 2 minutes of reading time) speaking with a parent or carer. Cover paediatric dental trauma (avulsed permanent incisor, luxation), early childhood caries, molar-incisor hypomineralisation, inhaled or ingested dental foreign body, preventive fluoride/fissure-sealant advice, or child safeguarding.

5

OSCE — Prescribing, Therapeutics & Cross-Infection Viva

7-minute MFDS Part 2 examiner-led OSCE viva (after 2 minutes of reading time). Answer structured examiner questions on Dental Practitioners' Formulary (DPF) and SDCEP antimicrobial prescribing, analgesic regimens, local anaesthetic maximum doses, HTM 01-05 decontamination and cross-infection control, and IR(ME)R 2017 radiation protection.

6

Diagnostic & Treatment Planning — Patient History

7-minute MFDS Part 2 patient consultation (after 2 minutes of reading time). Take a comprehensive dental, medical and social history from the simulated patient for a multidisciplinary dental case, exploring presenting complaints, expectations, medical modifiers and risk factors.

7

Diagnostic & Treatment Planning — Examiner Oral

7-minute MFDS Part 2 unseen-case examiner oral (after 2 minutes of reading time). Review the special investigations, charting and dental radiographs (periapicals, bitewings, DPT, BPE and 6-point periodontal chart) to state your diagnoses, tooth-by-tooth prognosis, and phased treatment plan (acute stabilisation, prevention, definitive restorative/prosthodontic care, and maintenance/recall).

8

Medical Emergencies in Dental Practice Viva

7-minute MFDS Part 2 examiner-led structured oral (after 2 minutes of reading time). Recognise and manage acute medical emergencies in the dental surgery using an ABCDE approach and Resuscitation Council UK / BNF emergency drug doses and routes — anaphylaxis, adrenal crisis, acute severe asthma, angina/myocardial infarction, hypoglycaemia, status epilepticus, vasovagal syncope, and choking/airway obstruction.

Sample MFDS Part 2 questions

Two questions from the topics that come up most in MedMock's MFDS Part 2 bank.

Diagnostic & Treatment Planning — Examiner Oral

“A 48-year-old patient with poorly controlled type 2 diabetes presents with generalised Stage III Grade C periodontitis, secondary caries under an upper first molar crown, and a missing upper first premolar. Present your diagnoses, tooth-level prognoses, and phased treatment plan.”

OSCE — Prescribing, Therapeutics & Cross-Infection Viva

“A 71-year-old woman taking warfarin for a mechanical mitral valve and alendronic acid for osteoporosis requires extraction of an unrestorable lower molar. Walk the examiner through your peri-operative bleeding and MRONJ risk assessment and management under SDCEP guidance.”

Example scenarios

A sample of the MFDS Part 2 scenarios you can practise, each as a spoken conversation.

OSCE — History & Information Gathering

“A 68-year-old man on apixaban for atrial fibrillation and alendronic acid for osteoporosis attends with a painful, mobile lower first molar. Take a focused dental and medical history and assess his extraction risk.”

OSCE — Breaking Bad News, Ethics & Candour

“A 56-year-old smoker has a persistent 2 cm indurated ulcer on the lateral border of his tongue present for four weeks. Explain why you are referring him on the urgent two-week-wait head and neck pathway.”

Diagnostic & Treatment Planning — Examiner Oral

“A 48-year-old patient with poorly controlled type 2 diabetes presents with generalised Stage III Grade C periodontitis, secondary caries under an UL6 crown, and a missing UR4. Present your diagnoses, tooth prognoses, and phased treatment plan.”

Medical Emergencies in Dental Practice Viva

“Two minutes after you administer an inferior alveolar nerve block and prescribe amoxicillin, your 34-year-old patient develops stridor, wheeze, facial swelling and hypotension (BP 78/42 mmHg). Talk the examiner through your immediate management and emergency drug doses.”
