What is the Audiovestibular Medicine ST3 interview, and how do you practise for it?

Audiovestibular Medicine ST3 national recruitment interview, run online by Physician Higher Specialty Training: two 20-minute stations, each with two questions of about 10 minutes. Station 1 is a brief written clinical scenario, with communication marked during that question only, then an ethics, professionalism and governance situation given verbally. Station 2 is a written ethical scenario, then suitability and commitment to the specialty. MedMock lets you practise it out loud against an AI interview panel, with examiner-style feedback on any station you finish.

Audiovestibular Medicine ST3, 2025 recruitment round (Round 2). NHS England competition ratios

  • The lead recruiter for audiovestibular medicine is the London Recruitment Office.
  • The interview has two stations and four questions of 10 minutes each. Applicants are marked on the four questions and on communication skills, giving five scored areas, and the interview takes approximately 50 minutes.
  • Besides the clinical scenario and a suitability and commitment question, the interview has two ethics-related questions: one on ethical, professionalism and governance issues, and a separate ethical scenario given to review beforehand.
  • The interview score is weighted: clinical scenario 2.0, communication 1.5, professionalism and governance 1.5, ethical scenario 1.0, and suitability and commitment 2.0, with a raw interview score out of 50.
  • Audiovestibular medicine accepts applicants from general practice, otolaryngology (ENT) and paediatrics as well as core-level physician training. Non-physician applicants need the basic specialty professional examination.
  • Commitment to specialty is not assessed at shortlisting. The application is scored purely through the self-assessment scoring framework, and commitment is assessed at interview.

How it works

1

Choose a station

Choose the kind of question or scenario you want to rehearse — ethics, motivation, a role-play, and more.

Have the conversation

Speak naturally, out loud. The AI interviewer listens and asks the demanding follow-ups, just as a real interviewer would.

3

Get instant feedback

The moment you finish, you get specific, examiner-style feedback and a score — what you did well, what cost you marks, and precisely what to fix before the next attempt.

Practise every scenario

MedMock covers the stations you will face in the Audiovestibular Medicine ST3 interview. Rehearse each one until it feels routine.

1

Station 1

Question 1 (about 10 minutes): a brief written clinical scenario to review, for example sudden sensorineural hearing loss, Ménière's disease or a vestibular schwannoma, then the steps you would take, treatments, further information and communication. Communication is marked only during this question. Question 2 (about 10 minutes): an ethics, professionalism and governance situation given verbally, then questions on GMC Good Medical Practice.

2

Station 2

Question 1 (about 10 minutes): a brief written ethical scenario to review, then discussion of its moral, ethical and legal issues. Question 2 (about 10 minutes): your suitability for and commitment to training in audiovestibular medicine, expanding on your application form.

Sample Audiovestibular Medicine (ST3) interview questions

Two questions from the topics that come up most in MedMock's Audiovestibular Medicine (ST3) bank.

Station 1

“A mother describes chronic foul-smelling discharge from her 9-year-old son's left ear over several months, with otoscopy revealing an attic retraction pocket with debris. How would you manage this presentation?”

Station 2

“A grateful patient who received a successful cochlear implant offers you an expensive gift after her operation, saying she wants to thank you personally rather than the whole team. What are the issues here and how would you approach this?”

Example scenarios

A sample of the Audiovestibular Medicine ST3 scenarios you can practise, each as a spoken conversation.

Station 1

“A 45-year-old presents with a 36-hour history of severe right-sided sensorineural hearing loss. Discuss your workup and management.”

Station 2

“A 75-year-old with bilateral severe-to-profound sensorineural hearing loss is refusing cochlear implant evaluation, against his family's wishes. What are the ethical issues? Then: what have you done to test your commitment to audiovestibular medicine?”
