What is the Otolaryngology (ENT) ST3 interview, and how do you practise for it?

NHS England North East and Yorkshire national recruitment for ENT ST3: an interview of three ten-minute stations, Professional, Communication and Clinical. Professional is questions from the panel on leadership and professionalism, Communication is a role-play with a trained actor (such as breaking bad news, consent or a difficult conversation), and Clinical is based on a clinical scenario. Two interviewers assess each station; MedMock does not simulate the second interviewer. MedMock lets you practise it out loud against an AI interview panel, with examiner-style feedback on any station you finish.

Otolaryngology ST3, 2025 recruitment round (Round 2). NHS England competition ratios

  • The National Recruitment Office for ENT ST3 is NHS England North East and Yorkshire, which coordinates recruitment across England and Scotland.
  • In the 2026 round, the ENT interview had three ten-minute stations: professional, communication and clinical. Each was assessed independently by two interviewers.
  • In the 2026 ENT interview, the communication station was a role-play scenario with a trained actor.
  • In the 2026 round, ENT applicants were shortlisted using their validated self-assessment score, with a panel of clinicians reviewing the uploaded evidence.
  • MRCS (ENT) is no longer an essential qualification for ENT ST3. For 2026 entry, applicants had to complete all parts of the MRCS exam by 14 April 2026, though MRCS (ENT) was still accepted.
  • For 2027 entry, ENT ST3 applications open at 10am on 19th November 2026 and close at 4pm on 10th December 2026, with online interviews on 11-12 March 2027. A second round is not expected in 2027.

Otolaryngology (ENT) ST3 interview practice, on demand

MedMock gives you an AI interviewer who challenges your answers, available 24/7. Pick a station, have a spoken conversation, and ask for examiner-style feedback when you finish, scored against what genuinely matters in the Otolaryngology (ENT) ST3.

How it works

1

Choose a station

Choose the kind of question or scenario you want to rehearse — ethics, motivation, a role-play, and more.

2

Have the conversation

Speak naturally, out loud. The AI interviewer listens and asks the demanding follow-ups, just as a real interviewer would.

3

Get instant feedback

The moment you finish, you get specific, examiner-style feedback and a score — what you did well, what cost you marks, and precisely what to fix before the next attempt.

Practise every scenario

MedMock covers the stations you will face in the Otolaryngology (ENT) ST3 interview. Rehearse each one until it feels routine.

1

Professional

10-minute leadership and professionalism questions; 2 minutes' reading; if a paper or topic was sent up to 7 days in advance, you may be asked to present or discuss it before questions on its content and on wider professional skills. The handbook gives no length for that presentation.

2

Communication

Role-play with a trained actor (e.g. breaking bad news, obtaining consent, managing difficult behaviour); 2 min reading; assessed independently by two interviewers on empathy, structure, clarity, non-verbal communication, and handling of emotion.

3

Clinical

An ENT clinical scenario discussed with the panel: how you would assess, investigate and manage the patient, and when you would escalate.

Sample Otolaryngology (ENT) (ST3) interview questions

Two questions from the topics that come up most in MedMock's Otolaryngology (ENT) (ST3) bank.

Professional

“Present your commitment to a long-term career in otolaryngology.”

Communication

“A patient has a biopsy-proven squamous cell carcinoma of the floor of mouth. You need to consent him for a wide local excision, marginal mandibulectomy, and selective neck dissection. Explain this complex procedure and its risks.”

Example scenarios

A sample of the Otolaryngology (ENT) ST3 scenarios you can practise, each as a spoken conversation.

Professional

“You are the senior ENT trainee on call. An SHO under your supervision phones at 02:00 in distress about an emergency tracheostomy where consent was not adequately obtained. The patient is stable. Walk me through how you would manage this — tonight, in the days that follow, and as a future consultant.”

Communication

“Counsel a 40-year-old man, with his wife in the room, about an MRI showing a 1.8 cm right cerebellopontine-angle mass consistent with a vestibular schwannoma (acoustic neuroma). Discuss the diagnosis and the management options at a layperson's pitch.”
