What is the MRCOG Assessment OSCE, and how do you practise for it?

Evaluates patient safety, applied clinical knowledge, information gathering, and communication with patients, families and colleagues across the full O&G curriculum. The real circuit is 14 tasks, one per syllabus module, with no published station titles; these practice stations group the tasks by type and run as 2-min reading + actor-led encounter or examiner-led structured discussion. A real circuit may also include linked tasks, where the second task builds on the first, and a writing task; MedMock runs each task on its own and has no writing task. MedMock lets you practise it out loud against an AI patient, with examiner-style feedback on any station you finish.

MRCOG Assessment OSCE practice, on demand

MedMock gives you a simulated patient who responds realistically, available 24/7. Pick a station, have a spoken conversation, and ask for examiner-style feedback when you finish, scored against what genuinely matters in the MRCOG Assessment.

How it works

1

Choose a station

Pick from the MRCOG Assessment stations — all 7 that MedMock runs, or let MedMock surprise you the way exam day will.

2

Have the conversation

Speak naturally, out loud. The AI patient responds in real time — with emotions, cues and unexpected turns, just like a real encounter.

3

Get instant feedback

The moment you finish, you get specific, examiner-style feedback and a score — what you did well, what cost you marks, and precisely what to fix before the next attempt.

Practise every station

MedMock covers the stations you will face in the MRCOG Assessment OSCE. Rehearse each one until it feels routine.

1

Information Giving

Simulated patient task: counsel a patient on a diagnosis, investigation result or treatment option (e.g. PCOS, HMB, heavily dyskaryotic smear, contraception choice).

2

Breaking Bad News

Simulated patient task: deliver difficult news (e.g. miscarriage, fetal anomaly, gynaecological malignancy) using SPIKES, manage emotion, agree next steps.

3

Consent & Triadic Communication

Simulated patient task with partner / relative in room: obtain informed consent for a procedure (e.g. laparoscopy, LLETZ, TOP) or navigate a capacity / autonomy dilemma.

4

Acute Obstetric Emergency

Simulated colleague task: lead a labour-ward emergency with the midwife as the primary interlocutor (e.g. PPH, eclampsia, shoulder dystocia, cord prolapse, ruptured ectopic). Tests team leadership, drug doses, escalation.

5

Communication with Colleagues

Simulated colleague task: communicate with a trainee doctor, a midwife or a nurse — for example handing over a complex patient, discussing an adverse incident, resolving a disagreement about a plan or supporting a struggling trainee.

6

Structured Discussion — Clinical

Examiner-led viva on a clinical scenario from the O&G curriculum (e.g. management of placenta accreta, recurrent miscarriage workup, gynae-oncology MDT decision). Anchored in RCOG Green-tops, NICE NG133 / NG121, MBRRACE-UK.

7

Structured Discussion — Ethics & Governance

Examiner-led viva on an ethical, governance or duty-of-candour scenario specific to O&G practice (e.g. conscientious objection in TOP, disclosure of a never event, capacity to consent to LARC, sex-selective TOP request).

Sample MRCOG Assessment questions

Two questions from the topics that come up most in MedMock's MRCOG Assessment bank.

Acute Obstetric Emergency

“You are the on-call O&G registrar. A 40-year-old patient develops an eclamptic fit. You have administered magnesium sulphate. She has a second fit 15 minutes later. Manage this refractory eclampsia.”

Consent & Triadic Communication

“A 28-year-old woman has had a failed medical TOP and now requires surgical completion. She is with her friend and is very upset. Obtain consent for the surgical procedure, acknowledging her distress and the previous failed treatment.”

Example scenarios

A sample of the MRCOG Assessment scenarios you can practise, each as a spoken conversation.

Information Giving

“Explain the diagnosis and management implications of heavily dyskaryotic cervical screening results to a 34-year-old woman who has just found out.”

Breaking Bad News

“Tell a 38-year-old G1P0 at 22+3/40 that the anomaly scan has identified bilateral renal agenesis and the prognosis is incompatible with life.”

Acute Obstetric Emergency

“You are the on-call O&G registrar. The labour-ward midwife has called you for a primary PPH with an estimated 1500 mL blood loss following SVD. Lead the call.”

Communication with Colleagues

“A midwife is upset that you did not come when she asked for a review of an abnormal trace overnight. Discuss the incident with her.”

Structured Discussion — Clinical

“Discuss your management of a P2 G3 woman at 36/40 with placenta praevia and a previous LSCS who has presented with a fresh PV bleed of 500 mL.”

Structured Discussion — Ethics & Governance

“A patient asks you to perform a sterilisation at caesarean section, but the consent form was signed during labour. Discuss the issues and your approach.”

MRCOG Assessment practice — your questions answered

How does the feedback work?

When you finish a station you can have it marked, and the scorecard comes back in seconds — what you did well, what cost you marks, and exactly what to work on next. Marking costs 2 credits on top of the practice, you choose which stations to mark, and the price is shown before you are charged.

Can I practise specific MRCOG Assessment stations?

Yes. You can pick any of the 7 stations to drill a weak area, or run a mixed set to simulate the real exam.

How much does it cost?

Every plan includes a monthly credit allowance, and everyone starts with a free trial with no card required. Current prices are on the pricing page.

Formats change from year to year: check the official candidate guidance or applicant handbook from the body that runs your exam or interview (the Royal Colleges, NHS England, the GMC and others) for your sitting.
