Obstetrics and Gynaecology ST1, 2025 recruitment round (Round 1). NHS England competition ratios

  • Specialty training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology is a 7-year run-through programme.
  • NHSE North West Local Office is responsible for national recruitment to ST1 Obstetrics and Gynaecology across England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.
  • ST1 Obstetrics and Gynaecology selection has 3 stages, and the MSRA is mandatory for all longlisted applicants. Applicants whose MSRA score is too low are shortlisted out, and those ranking within the top 75 bypass the interview.
  • The online interview has two stations and lasts approximately 30 minutes. Station 1 has a clinical prioritisation question and an ethical and governance question; Station 2 has structured interview questions.
  • Each online interview panel has a minimum of 2 assessors who score independently. A lay chair and the recruitment lead review all scores, and there is no appeals process for interview scores.
  • Applicants must show evidence of Foundation competence achieved within the 3 and a half years before the intended start date of the post.
  • For Round 1 (August 2027 intake), applications open on 22 October 2026 and close on 19 November 2026. Interviews are in January 2027 and initial offers are released on 6 April 2027.

Obstetrics & Gynaecology ST1 interview practice, on demand

MedMock gives you an AI interviewer who challenges your answers, available 24/7. Pick a station, have a spoken conversation, and ask for examiner-style feedback when you finish, scored against what genuinely matters in the Obstetrics & Gynaecology ST1.

How it works

1

Choose a station

Choose the kind of question or scenario you want to rehearse — ethics, motivation, a role-play, and more.

2

Have the conversation

Speak naturally, out loud. The AI interviewer listens and asks the demanding follow-ups, just as a real interviewer would.

3

Get instant feedback

The moment you finish, you get specific, examiner-style feedback and a score — what you did well, what cost you marks, and precisely what to fix before the next attempt.

Practise every scenario

MedMock covers the stations you will face in the Obstetrics & Gynaecology ST1 interview. Rehearse each one until it feels routine.

1

Station 1 — Clinical Prioritisation, Ethics and Governance

Five minutes to read a written clinical prioritisation scenario, then 6 minutes on what you would do first, what can wait and why, followed by a separate 4-minute ethical and governance question. NHS England does not publish how many patients or tasks the scenario contains.

2

Station 2 — Structured Interview Questions

Ten minutes of structured interview questions. No portfolio is needed. NHS England publishes the four scored areas: commitment to the specialty, quality improvement, research and teaching, and experience outside medicine, leadership and teamworking.

Station 2 — Structured Interview Questions

“What have you learned from observing how consultants communicate risk during pregnancy complications?”
