What is the Gastroenterology ST4 interview, and how do you practise for it?

Physician Higher Specialty Training national ST4 interview for Gastroenterology (hepatology is a sub-specialty interest within it): two 15-minute stations, each with its own pair of interviewers. Station 1 is a brief written clinical scenario, then a four-minute presentation you prepare in advance; Station 2 is suitability and commitment, then medical registrar suitability, opened by a one-minute presentation on the acute unselected take. Communication is scored in both stations. Both interviewers score each area 1 to 5, and to be appointable none of the twelve scores may be 1, no more than two may be 2, and the raw interview score must be at least 36 out of 60. MedMock's feedback is practice scoring, not an appointability decision. MedMock lets you practise it out loud against an AI interview panel, with examiner-style feedback on any station you finish.

Gastroenterology ST4, 2025 recruitment round (Round 2). NHS England competition ratios

  • The lead recruiter for gastroenterology is Scotland (NHS Education for Scotland).
  • Gastroenterology is a Group 1 specialty: applicants need to have completed the internal medicine training (IMT) stage 1 programme or equivalent, and all programmes dual specialise with general internal medicine.
  • Each of the two interview stations lasts 15 minutes, with four questions of between 5 and 10 minutes, and the whole interview takes approximately 40 minutes.
  • Interviewees give a presentation of no more than four minutes on either an interesting case they have been involved in or an interesting recent development in gastroenterology.
  • The specialty assesses commitment to specialty as part of shortlisting.
  • To be appointable at interview, none of the twelve interview scores can be 1/5, no more than two can be 2/5, and the raw interview score must be 36 or above.
  • Like other physician specialties recruited through PHST, this specialty holds its interview online using Qpercom Recruit.

Gastroenterology ST4 interview practice, on demand

MedMock gives you an AI interviewer who challenges your answers, available 24/7. Pick a station, have a spoken conversation, and ask for examiner-style feedback when you finish, scored against what genuinely matters in the Gastroenterology ST4.

How it works

1

Choose a station

Choose the kind of question or scenario you want to rehearse — ethics, motivation, a role-play, and more.

2

Have the conversation

Speak naturally, out loud. The AI interviewer listens and asks the demanding follow-ups, just as a real interviewer would.

3

Get instant feedback

The moment you finish, you get specific, examiner-style feedback and a score — what you did well, what cost you marks, and precisely what to fix before the next attempt.

Practise every scenario

MedMock covers the stations you will face in the Gastroenterology ST4 interview. Rehearse each one until it feels routine.

1

Station 1

About 7 minutes on a brief written clinical scenario you review beforehand, then your presentation of no more than four minutes on 'An interesting case I have been involved in' or 'An interesting recent development in gastroenterology', and about four minutes of discussion. Communication is scored across the station.

2

Station 2

About 7 minutes on your suitability for and commitment to gastroenterology, then about 8 minutes on medical registrar suitability: a one-minute presentation summarising your experience of managing the acute unselected medical take, then questions on leading the take and the multidisciplinary team, including discharge planning.

Sample Gastroenterology (ST4) interview questions

Two questions from the topics that come up most in MedMock's Gastroenterology (ST4) bank.

Station 2

“What are your personal development goals for your first year as a gastroenterology registrar?”

Station 1

“A 48-year-old man with cirrhosis is being considered for a liver transplant. What are the key criteria for listing, and how would you explain the assessment process to the patient and their family?”

Example scenarios

A sample of the Gastroenterology ST4 scenarios you can practise, each as a spoken conversation.

Station 1

“You are called to ED. A 58-year-old man with known alcohol-related cirrhosis presents with large-volume haematemesis, HR 125, BP 88/52. Talk us through your immediate assessment and management.”

Station 2

“Describe a situation where you had to manage competing priorities on the acute unselected medical take. What did you learn?”
